Martial Arts Education, Highlights, and Experience:

Fredericton, New Brunswick (1970-1985)

Began with Kodokan Judo in a club affiliate of the Fredericton Judo Club (1970-1972).

Began study of Kung Fu from Bill McGraw in 1973 (also an Aikido Sensei). Concurrently, became member of the Pai Lum Kung Fu System (headed by Grandmaster Daniel Pai, Florida) in 1974. Continued to study and practice directly from Bill McGraw's teacher, Master Jae Keung (1974-1985). The styles of Kung Fu learned included Hung Ga, Choy Li Fut, Praying Mantis, Wing Chun, and Northern Shaolin (Wei Chin Kung Fu Association).

In 1980, began intensive training in preparation for kickboxing debut. However, discouraged from fighting.

From 1981 to 1983 learned basic wushu fist sets, weapon sets, simplified Taijiquan (24), BaGua Zhang, and XingYi Quan from Luo ZhengLun, visiting Research Scientist (Chengdu, Sichuan, China) at the University of New Brunswick.

Ottawa, Ontario (1985-1986)

Taught Kung Fu at Bob Carver's Martial Arts Center (1986).

Certification of seminar taught by Guro Dan Inosanto and Chris Kent on Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jeet Kune Do concepts, Wing Chun and Filipino Kali. Dan Inosanto is the protege of Bruce Lee and leader of Jeet Kune Do (Los Angeles).

Montreal, Quebec (1986-1988)

Began Chen Style Taijiquan with Andrea Falk and Changquan with Paule Bertrand at The Wushu Centre. Both teachers are former Canadian National Wushu Team members, having competed internationally with success.

Began Wu Style Taijiquan with Master Lee Man Charn at the Hung Wai Tai Chi Chuan Association. He is president, for the Eastern Canadian Chinese Kuo Shou Federation.

Attended a seminar at the Gelinas Kajukenbo/Kali Institute given by Grandmaster Al Dacascos, founder of Won Hop Kuen Do (Portland).

Participated in several seminars presented by Sam Masich, former National Wushu Team member (Vancouver), on the art of Push Hands at The Wushu Centre. The latest of these were held in November 1989.

Vancouver, British Columbia (1988)

Began tutelage under Master Liang Shouyu in Changquan, Taijiquan (24 and 48), and XingYi Quan. Master Liang has been the former head coach of the Canadian National Wushu Team and currently chief advisor for the United Wushu Federation..

Practised Changquan with professional competitors Alice Chang and William Chung; former National Wushu Team member Bruce Fontaine; and with Peter Tse, Wushu coach.

Sharon, Pennsylvania (1988 & 1989)

Attended the Wushu Expo in April 1988 and April 1989, held at Nick Gracenin's Chinese Wushu Research Institute. Nick Gracenin is the US/Pan American representative of the International Wushu Federation and former head coach of the USA National Wushu Team.

A seminar was given by Master Yang Jwing Ming (Boston) on the straight sword (April 1988).

Competed in Men's B Changquan competition, Gold Medal (April 1989).

Vancouver, British Columbia (August 1989)

Attended a 10 day workshop given by Sam Masich on The Art of Teaching Taijiquan. Certification of Level 1 Instructor's Class awarded by The Tai Chi Group International.

Houston, Texas September (1989)

Participated in the 1989 US National Chinese Martial Arts Competitions. Competed in Chen Style Taijiquan, nationally rated Level A. Finals competitions in this event culminated with fourth place result.

Attended a workshop on Liu He Ba Fa given by Master Liang Shouyu (Vancouver). Attended a workshop on Wu Mei Pai Kung Fu given by Master Ken Lo (New York).

Sharon, Pennsylvania (May 1990)

Attended Nick Gracenin's Wushu Expo’90 at CWRI. Gave a demonstration of Chen Style Taijiquan. Learned basic swordplay and Taiji Sword form from special guest instructors, Madame Wang Jurong (Shanghai), accupressure and Chinese massage from Dr. Wu Chengde (Shanghai); joint locking Chin Na and reaction skills for self defense from Jeff Bolt (Houston) and BaGua Zhang from Nick Gracenin. Also practised the International Wushu competition routine for Taijiquan (42) with Louisa Martin (Mobile, Alabama).

Warwick, New York (June 1990)

Visited Master Jou Tsung Hwa's Taiji Farm for the celebration of the birthday of the legendary founder of Taijiquan, Zhang Sanfeng. Workshops from teachers and masters included swordplay by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming, Taijiquan applications by Master Zhang Luping, and Nine Dragon Style BaGua Zhang QiGong by Dr. John Painter.

Joined in the creation of an association of teachers, called The Taiji Teachers Exchange,to promote Taijiquan in the community, to network a looseknit coalition for contacts, ideas, resources and information.

Boston, Massachusetts (June 1990)

Journeyed to Master Yang's Martial Arts Association (YMAA) Headquarters for his weekend seminar on Taiji Push Hands, Taiji QiGong, and Jing training in ongoing study and tutelage. Yang Jwing Ming was named Inside Kung Fu Magazine's Man Of The Year 1990.

Winchester, Virginia (July 1990)

Site for the 1990 USA All Taijiquan Championships and Traditional Yang Style Seminar. Competed in Chen Style Taijiquan, placing second with silver medal. The featured instuctor, Master Yang Zhenduo, fourth generation heir to Yang Style Taijiquan (Hangzhou, China), taught the traditional Yang form in a week long seminar.

Other seminars on various styles and topics given by Masters Liang Shouyu,Yang Jwing Ming, Shih Tzukuo, Jou Tsung Hwa, Huang Weilun, Fu Shuyun, Yu Cheng Hsiang, Daniel Lee, Huang Chien Liang, and Abraham Liu.

Houston, Texas (September 1990)

Gold medal for first place finish in the Chen Style Taijiquan division of the 1990 US National Chinese Martial Arts Competitions. (Nationally rated Level A competitor.) Participated in officiating tournament with directors Jeff Bolt and Jan Watson.

Seminars and lessons by Master Zhang Luping on Sun Style Taijiquan and Yang Style Taijiquan. Taught Push Hands informally. Attended USNCMAC Conference of Taiji Teachers to discuss evolving issues and concerns.

Boston, Massachusetts (October 1990)

Week long visit at YMAA for ongoing training and practise.

Montreal, Quebec (November 1990)

Attended seminar on Chin Na, Qigong and Taiji Push Hands given by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming (Boston), which was hosted by La Societe Tai Chi Chuan du Vieux Montreal.

Ottawa, Ontario (1989-1991)

Taught simplified Taijiquan (24) in Winter Session at the Armand Page Community Centre, 1990.

Invited participation in celebration of Chinese New Year's by demonstrations of Chen and Yang Taiji, Nanquan, and Changquan for the Centre for Chinese Arts and Education of Ottawa at the Adult High School, February 1990.

Wushu teacher for children's class at St. Anthony's School for the Centre for Chinese Arts and Education. Assistant instructor of Chen Style Taijiquan class given by Xu Chen.

Assisted Wu Style Taijiquan senior classmate, Manuel Turgeon, at Taijiquan course being given at the University of Ottawa, Winter 1991.

Grand Falls, New Brunswick (February 1991)

Sponsored for weekend workshop on Taijiquan theory and principles with introductory form to Wei Chin Kung Fu at Grand Falls. As featured guest of the 1991 Grand Falls Full Contact Tournament, performed demonstration of Chen Taijiquan.

Ottawa, Ontario (February 1991)

Representing the Centre for Chinese Arts and Education of Ottawa, gave performances of Chen Style Taijiquan and broadsword routine for Chinese New Year's celebration at the Civic Centre.

Boston, Massachusetts (April 1991)

Weekend seminar was held at YMAA, featuring Master Liang Shouyu, Master Xiao Binsheng and Sam Masich, all from Vancouver. Master Liang taught Emei BaGua Zhang, covering solo and paired sets. A former national spear champion of China, Master Xiao gave a clinic on spearplay.

Ottawa, Ontario (May 1991)

Master Phap Lu's North American Tae Kwon Do Invitational Tournament was held at Algonquin College, Woodroffe Campus. As guest performer, demonstrated Chen Style Taijiquan.

Warwick, New York (June 1991)

Annual attendance at Master Jou's Taiji Farm for the 19th Zhang San Feng Festival.Took lessons on Wu Style Taijiquan and BaGua Zhang applications from Master Zhang Luping. Shared in celebrations with a demonstration of taijiquan for friends and teachers.

Meeting with Master John Lee of Toronto to discuss and promote the growth of the Canadian Taijiquan Federation. The federation will sponsor the first Canadian Taijiquan Push Hands Tournament at the fourth annual Canadian Kuo Shou Federation Kung Fu Competitions in November 1991.

Winchester, Virginia (July 1991)

Results from the 1991 USA All Taijiquan Championships: Gold medal win for Other Styles (International Combined Taijiquan Competition Form) and bronze medal in Chen Style Taijiquan. The International Combination Form has elements and movements of the four major styles of taijiquan (Chen, Yang, Wu, Sun).

Participated in forming a group of Wu Style practitioners to petition the creation of a new style division for competition. After Yang Style, Wu Style is the next most popular taijiquan style practised worldwide.

Ottawa, Ontario (Summer 1991)

Began teaching a group of senior Yang Style Taijiquan players from the Ottawa Chinese Language School (Adult High School). They had sought advanced instruction in taijiquan and taiji push hands. Instruction, by necessity, must focus primarily on corrective measures: body alignment, form, stepping. Engaged in reteaching, appealing to relaxation, taiji principles and overall fundamentals. (pedagogy versus demagoguery).

Houston, Texas (September 1991)

Provided aid and support to Jeff Bolt and Jan Watson in tournament as an official, in scheduling events/administrative help and as a judge in Wu Style Taijiquan forms competition.

Seminar on double edged straight sword with Master He Weiqi, one of the premierswordswomen of China (now Richmond,Virginia). She, along with Liang Shouyu, were acknowledged and awarded in China, as among the 17 top coaches and teachers of wushu; each producing provincial and national champions.

Ottawa, Ontario (Fall 1991)

Taught Yang Style Taijiquan at Carleton Heights Community Centre, Cairine Wilson Secondary School, Foster Farm Community Centre. and St. Anthony's School. As well, taught Changquan to children at Foster Farm and St. Anthony's.

Toronto, Ontario (November 1991)

Participated in the first Canadian Taijiquan Competitions as an official and judge. This was held in conjunction with the fourth annual Canadian Chinese Kou Shou Federation martial arts tournament.

Montreal, Quebec (November 1991)

The first Canadian National Conference for Chinese Martial Arts was held here. Attended as a director and representative of the Centre for Chinese Arts and Education of Ottawa. Joined a committee to study and provide improvements to the rules, qualifications, and judging in establishing a standard for national competitions with respect to international levels.

Ottawa, Ontario (Winter 1992 to 1994)

Began teaching Taijiquan at Hintonburg Community Centre, through the winter, spring and fall sessions (1992 to present). Continuation of Taijiquan courses at Cairine Wilson Secondary School and Carleton Heights Community Centre (1991-1993).

Gave an introductory workshop to children on Changquan at Carleton Heights Community Centre in March 1992.

Invited to the taijiquan group at the Ottawa Chinese Language School for a talk and discussions on improving the level of skill in taiji practise (Winter 1992).

Gave a talk to a group, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) on Taijiquan with a demonstration, at Hintonburg Community Centre (Spring 1993).

Began teaching Taijiquan at the University of Ottawa, through fall and winter sessions (Fall 1992).

Taught children’s kung fu classes at the Chinese Language School (Fall 1992 to Winter 1993).

Began teaching Yang Style Taijiquan and Changquan at the Kung Fu Family Health Centre (1993-1994) until its eventual bankruptcy.

Performed nanquan at the National Kung Fu Master's Exhibitions presented by the Canadian Chinese Kuo Shu Federation in Ottawa (January 1994).

Winchester, Virginia (July 1992)

Attended the annual USA All Taijiquan Championships and Seminars.

Toronto, Ontario (November 1992)

Judged Wu, Yang and Chen Taijiquan at the Canadian Chinese Kuo Shu Federation Tournament.

Toronto, Ontario (October 1993)

Judged various taijiquan divisions at the Canadian Chinese Kuo Shu Federation Tournament.

Warwick, New York (August 1994)

Attended a week long training seminar with Master Hsiung Wei of Taipei, Taiwan, sponsored by Master Jou Tsung Hwa at the Taiji Farm.. He taught Taiji Daoyin, a unique synthesis of small circle Chen Style coiling energy training with Taoist joint stretching exercises. He also taught Hao Style Taijiquan, the most rare of all Taijiquan styles.

Baltimore, Maryland (August 1994)

Grandmaster Fu Zhongwen, and Master Fu Qingquan of Shanghai were special guests of the US Kuo Shou Federation.

Took part in his seminar on Yang Style Taijiquan.

Mobile, Alabama (August 1994)

Was invited to judge at Liu Xiangyang’s USA Chinese Martial Arts Championships

Also attended Grandmaster Fu Zhongwen’s weekend seminar on Yang Style Taijiquan.

Toronto, Canada (April 1995)

Attended an intensive workshop given by Master Jerry Alan Johnson on Qi Healing, sponsored by Andy James of Emerge Internal Arts. This course spanned a regular course of a three year span. Andy James is the Canadian representative of Jerry Johnson’s college of Qi Healing in California.

Boston, Massachusetts (May 1995)

Master Liang’s annual visit to YMAA. Took part in seminars on Emei Qigong, XingYi Quan, and Chen Style Taijiquan.

Winchester, Virginia (July 1995)

Seminar attendence of guest masters Liang Shouyu, Yang Jwing Ming, Huang Weilun, Jou Tsung Hwa, Henry Look.

Baltimore, Maryland (August 1995)

This was the site of the US Wushu Kungfu Federation National Tournament and the 1995 World Wushu Festival.

Worked as head judge of numerous divisions, including Yang Style, Wu Style, southern kungfu and weapons divisions.

Phoenix, Arizona (April 1996)

Was invited to judge and demonstrate at Master Li Jinheng’s 1996 Martial Arts Extravaganza. Judged internal styles.

Boston, Massachusetts (May 1996)

Attended Master Liang Shouyu’s seminars on BaGua Zhang, Chen Style Taijiquan, Fanziquan, and Emei Qigong.

Houston, Texas (June 1996)

Attended US Wushu Kungfu Federation Southwest regional tournament, sponsored by Jeff Bolt and the Houston Institute of Chinese Martial Arts, as an official and chief judge of Chen Style taijiquan division.

Kansas City, Kansas (June 1996)

Invited judge for the US Wushu Federation Central States regional tournament, sponsored by Chun Man Sit. Demonstrated a southern style kungfu form at the closing ceremonies.

Also attended seminars given by Master Yang Yang on Chen Style taijiquan, covering a Chen style form with Qigong, Push Hands and applications. Master Yang Yang is one of the top Chen stylists in North America.

New York, New York (June 1996)

Invited for the US Wushu Kungfu Federation Northeast regional tournament; officiated as head judge in Yang Style Taijiquan divisions and referee of Push Hands competitions.

Toronto, Canada (June 1998)

Officiated and judged modern wushu at 2nd Pan-American Wushu Championships, Toronto, Ontario.

Baltimore, Maryland (August 1998)

Judged internal divisions at the 1998 USA Wushu Kungfu Federation National Tournament in Baltimore, Maryland.

Winchester, Virginia (July 1999)

Judged taijiquan, baguazhang and xinyiquan at the 1999 USA All Taijiquan Championships.

Dallas, Texas (June 1999 & 2000)

Assisted Master Joseph Chen at his seminar at the Taiji Legacy and Kungfu Championships. Served as Judge during the competitions as well

Toronto, Canada (October 2000)

Served as an official at the Canadian Wushu Kung Fu Challenge 2000.

Ottawa, Ontario (1995-present)

Have taught taijiquan at the Hintonburg Community Centre, the University of Ottawa, the Ottawa Tai Chi Chuan Association, (Chinese Language School). Also taught children’s kungfu classes at the Chinese Language School.

Local Chinese martial artists joined to form The National Capital Chinese Martial Arts Association (February 1995). Was voted in as Vice President. Subsequently, in the following term was voted in as President.

Gave a seminar on Taijiquan Principles, Theory and Practise to Wu Tang Martial Arts Canada (March 1999).

Certified as a Canadian National Wushu Judge for competitions as endorsed by the United Wushu Federation of Canada. Appointed Vice-President of the United Wushu Federation (UWF) (Spring 1999).

Presently teaching Changquan/Longfist at Brookfield High School (Fall 1998 to present).

Successfully competed at the 4th International Wushu Festival Competition held in Jinan, Shandong (August 1999), with a silver and two gold medals, for solo and group forms. Silver was awarded for Push Hands competition.

Began teaching introductory Yang style taijiquan at the Ottawa South Community Centre (September 2000 to present).

Introduced a Hunyuan Qigong course for January 2001.

Formally accepted as a disciple of Master Chen Zhonghua, into the lineage of Chen Style Taijiquan (September 1999).

Officially began a branch school of the Zhiqiang Taiji-Academy of Canada, the National Capital Wushu Research Centre (NCWRC), teaching taijiquan, modern/traditional wushu, and Hunyuan Qigong (November 1999 to present).

Taught a seminar on Taiji Straightsword Basic Skills to the instructors and students of le Centre de Taichi Gilles Vaillant in Hull, Quebec (February 2000).

Elected Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Taijiquan Federation (CTF) at the 2000 CTF Annual General Meeting (May 2000).

Involved as a director on the Canadian Martial Arts Games Committee (CMAGC) for the organization of the first Canadian Martial Arts Games Competition (June 2000).

Began teaching introductory Yang style taijiquan courses at the University of Ottawa, through the Sports Services Department and at Health Canada through Health Club Sante (September 2000 to present).

Appointed to the Board of Directors of the United Wushu Association of Ontario (UWAO). Subsequently, voted in later as President by December (October 2000).

Demonstrated Chen Shi Xinyi Hunyuan Taijiquan and Push Hands along with the 5 major style taijiquan applications at the Martial Arts Gala 2000 (November 2000).

Gave a technical lecture, The Essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taijiquan & Qigong: Qi Theory, at le Centre de Taichi Gilles Vaillant in Hull, Quebec (November 2000).

Corporate teaching of Hunyuan Qigong began at Cognos Incorporated at their Escape Fitness Centre (March 2001).

Courses for taijiquan, qigong and changquan will begin at the Nepean Creative Arts Centre (Spring 2001).

Appointed on the Head Table Committee of the 2001 National Wushu Team Selection and Kung Fu Open Competition to be held in Toronto, June 2001.
